What to Do When Your Safe Will Not Open

Change the battery first if the keypad is dead or beeping. If that does not help, stop and call. Forcing the door or guessing over and over can make the job bigger.

Try These Steps First

  1. Look for a battery door on the keypad and fit a fresh name brand 9 volt alkaline battery.
  2. Look for a backup key or a key lock behind a small panel.
  3. On a fingerprint model, clean and dry the sensor and try again.

A SecuRam support guide says the keypad warns you at low voltage, the code stays in the lock when the battery changes and lithium can damage the lock. Other brands can differ, so check your manual.

What We Do When We Arrive

  1. We check your ID and your proof that the safe is yours.
  2. We look at the lock, the bolts and the body.
  3. We try methods that do no damage, such as working the dial or keypad.
  4. If drilling is needed, we explain why and go over the price before starting.
  5. We repair or replace the lock and test it with the door open.

What It Can Cost

Safe prices vary more than door lock prices, because a home box and a bank grade safe take very different work. ACME Locksmith, a Phoenix area company, listed these drilling prices on September 10, 2026. They are not our quote, and you will hear ours first.

Questions We Get

Will a new battery erase my code?

On many electronic locks it will not, because the code is stored in the lock. Check the manual for your model.

I lost my safe key. Do I need a new safe?

Usually not. A locksmith can open the safe and repair or replace the lock.
